#LeadOER Capstone Project: Open Ed Symposium on March 8th, 2018

My capstone project for the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program will involve planning, promoting, and hosting an Open Education Symposium at Florida State University on March 8th, 2018. The purpose of the symposium will be to raise awareness about Open Educational Resources (OER) and their potential both to eliminate textbook affordability concerns and to create opportunities for innovative, learner-centered pedagogy. David Wiley has agreed to be our keynote speaker, and we are planning to have several invited presentations from FSU faculty and students in addition to collaborative breakout sessions.

In addition to raising awareness about open education and providing practical, hands-on sessions for attendees to discuss and develop related competencies, this symposium will also showcase some of the great work that is already underway at FSU. The winners of our first round of alternative textbook grants will be invited to participate in a panel presentation about their projects, with a view to highlighting their successes, surfacing the challenges they encountered, and discussing ways to advance the practices they have modeled across campus. In addition, two undergraduate researchers I have been working with on a campus-wide OER assessment project will be invited to present preliminary findings from the surveys and interviews they plan to conduct in early 2018.

My hope is that this project will not only serve an important purpose at my institution but also contribute value to the OER community more broadly. Although FSU Libraries has a fledgling OER initiative, we have done relatively little with respect to professional development and training opportunities for our faculty, and this symposium will certainly help to address that need.

Regarding the value of this project to the OER community, I'm planning to livestream the symposium presentations so that others can view remotely. I will also make all of the deliverables publicly available in an OSF project instance so that others can find, reuse, and adapt the session recordings, breakout session notes, and planning documents (e.g., budget, program, speaker invitation emails, promotion emails, marketing materials, etc.).

March 8th is just three months away, so our planning team will have to work hard to pull this off, but I'm pumped to get started and confident that the event will be successful. I'll do my best to post updates here over the coming months, so stay tuned for more info!
